BATAVIA PLAYERS ANNOUNCE THE 2009 SEASON
A Comedy of Errors, Virginia Woolf, The Wiz, Thornton Wilder and Charlie Brown come to the Batavia Stage
The Annual Meeting of the Batavia Players, Inc. was held at the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council in Batavia, New York on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Board President Patrick D. Burk read his Annual Report and provided the membership with the highlights of the 2008 Seasons. The Batavia Players are one of the longest continuous running community theater organizations in New York State in 2009 they will be celebrating their 77th year.
Three local high schools provided excerpts of their upcoming spring shows. Batavia High School’s Little Shop of Horrors, Pavilion High School’s Guys and Dolls, Elba Central School’s Bye, Bye Birdie along with excerpts from Players own A Comedy of Errors were presented to the members present. The Annual Meeting entertainment was coordinated by Vice President, Rose Mary Case.
With a total audience served of over 2300 patrons last year, the Players are preparing another five-show season. “We are extremely lucky to have such dedicated volunteers, performers and supporters,” declared Burk. “Our Board of Directors has always been willing to take chances to provide our area wonderful, quality theater.” Our 2008 Season included our annual Shakespeare offering to a full-blown musical with a cast of over seventy actors, singers and dancers. “It was a season to take pride in,” said Burk. The 2008 Season included Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Jesus Christ Superstar, An Evening of One Act Plays and The Christmas Quilt. Over 140 Performers appeared in Batavia Players in their 2008 Season.
New Board Members Gail Stevens, Michele Stamp and Joseph Elia were elected into office for a three-year term. The Board of Directors elected Patrick D. Burk – President, Gail Stevens – Vice President, Norm Argulski – Secretary and Sue Buckley – Treasurer. All officers will serve for one year.
The 2009 Batavia Player’s Season was announced at the end of the meeting. This year’s shows will include, William Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee, Summer Youth Theater Production of The Wiz, A Wilder Evening – One Act Plays by Thornton Wilder and during the holidays, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown featuring the City of Batavia All Elementary Chorus. A Comedy of Errors is first up and and scheduled for March 19 – 21 at John Kennedy Elementary on Vine Street in Batavia. Other dates and locations will soon be announced.
