What to Expect at an Audition

Each Batavia Players production has its own audition process. Requirements may vary depending on the director, production type, available roles, and licensing requirements.

An audition may include:
  • Reading scenes from the script
  • Performing a prepared song
  • Learning a short musical selection
  • Participating in a dance or movement call
  • Improvisation or character exercises
  • Completing an audition form
  • Sharing scheduling conflicts and availability

The individual audition notice will explain what to prepare, what materials will be provided, and whether appointments or advance registration are required.

No previous Batavia Players experience is necessary unless an audition notice specifically states otherwise.

Preparing for Your Audition

Read the complete audition notice before arriving. It will contain the most accurate information for that production.

Please be prepared to provide:
  • Your name and contact information
  • Relevant performance experience, if any
  • Known rehearsal and performance conflicts
  • Emergency contact information when required
  • A recent photograph or résumé if requested

For a musical audition, the notice may ask you to prepare a specific song or a short selection in a particular style. For a play, sides may be provided in advance or at the audition.

You do not need an extensive theatrical résumé to audition. Preparation, collaboration, and a willingness to take direction are often more important than previous experience.

Rehearsal and Performance Commitments

Community theater requires a significant commitment from the entire cast and production team.

Before accepting a role, review all available rehearsal, technical rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and performance dates. Directors build the rehearsal schedule around cast availability, but not every conflict can be accommodated.

Cast members are generally expected to:
  • Attend scheduled rehearsals
  • Arrive prepared and on time
  • Communicate conflicts promptly
  • Learn assigned lines, music, blocking, and choreography
  • Attend technical and dress rehearsals
  • Participate in all required performances
  • Work respectfully and collaboratively with the company

Production-specific expectations will be explained during auditions and before roles are accepted.

Casting at Batavia Players

Batavia Players is committed to creating meaningful opportunities for local performers and theater artists.

Casting decisions are based on the needs of each production, including the script, vocal requirements, movement demands, ensemble balance, performer availability, and the director’s artistic approach.

Specific age ranges or character requirements may apply when required by the material or production. Unless otherwise stated in the audition notice, performers of varied backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to audition.

There is no fee to audition for a Batavia Players production.

Youth and Teen Opportunities

Batavia Players offers performance and educational opportunities for children and teenagers through youth productions, summer theater programs, and selected mainstage shows.

Age requirements, registration procedures, tuition or camp costs, and audition expectations vary by program. Some youth programs may use registration or placement activities instead of a traditional competitive audition.

Parents and guardians should review the show's material before registering a young performer.

Audition Accessibility

We want performers to be able to participate fully in the audition process.

To request an audition accommodation or discuss an access need, contact Batavia Players before the audition date. Advance notice allows the production team to prepare appropriate support whenever possible.

Requests for accommodation will not negatively affect casting consideration.

Not Interested in Performing?

There are many ways to participate in a Batavia Players production beyond appearing onstage.

Volunteer opportunities may include stage management, lighting, sound, costumes, props, scenic work, set construction, front of house, hospitality, and general production support.

No previous theater experience is required for many volunteer roles.
